Memorial Day 2010

May 31st, 2010

Kathie and I made our way to the Black Hills National Cemetery for the 11 am Memorial Day ceremony. This was our first time for this event. (The speaker (his first time to speak at the Memorial Day ceremony) spoke about the sacrifices his buddies made and all the "first times" his buddies missed because of that.) He urged us to remember this and remember that because of guys like his buddies, we still can have lots of "first times" ahead.

After the ceremony, we went to the information booth at the entrance to the cemetery to look up locations of our parents graves.

We weren't the only ones visiting, as someone had decorated Kathie's parent's headstone: Earl and Phyllis Phelps. (G2602)

Then we circled the cemetery again and found Bob's parent's headstone: Orvil and Rebecca Buchanan. (J376)

Then we traveled to the Sturgis City Cemetery and found Bob's great grandparents' grave up near the top of the hill: Lavina and Elmer Morrison (A65 and A66).

Next we found Bob's grandparent's graves: F. Wayne and Marie E. Morrison (11-212 and 11-213).

Next to them was grandma's sister and husband: Leta and Ole Olson (11-214 and 11-215).

It was good to remember.
